Bernard Talley and Douglas Peterson were on a mission on 10 September 1966
when they were shot down. The target was a bridge and ferry complex near
Hanoi and as they were departing the target area the aircraft was hit by a
surface to air missile (SAM). Fortunately it was not a direct hit, thus
neither the pilot nor Talley were injured by the missile's blast. The
aircraft, however, was severely damaged. Both engines were rendered
inoperative and the entire aft portion of the aircraft was on fire. It was
immediately obvious they could not make it to the coast where rescue would
be possible. Therefore, after slowing the aircraft and attempting to radio
the position and situation, the co-pilot, Lt. Bernard Talley, and pilot,
Douglas Peterson, ejected. The time was 2100 hours 10 September 1966.

Bernard Talley spent the next 6 1/2 yrs. in captivity. He was released on
March 4, 1973 along with Douglas "Pete" Peterson. Talley retired from the
Air Force as a Colonel. He and his wife Marilyn reside in Texas. They are
active with NAM-POWs, Inc.
