Officer Candidate School August 1961 to February 1962. USS Waller (DD-466)
February 1962 to June 1964. Naval Flight Officer Training July 1964 to June
1965. Patrol Squadron Twenty Six (VP-26) July 1965 to January 1967. Fighter
Squadron One Hundred One (VP-101) January 1967 to June 1967. Fighter Squadron
One Hundred Two (VP-102) June 1967 to July 1968.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Anderson, South Carolina High School in 1956
and Clemson University in 1960 with a BS degree in Forestry.
FUTURE PLANS: To continue my Naval career in Aviation.
FAMILY: Seventeen days after release I was married to Miss Rebecca Otts of
Columbia, South Carolina.
SHOOT DOWN: I was on a bombing mission flying from the USS America when I was
shot down on 25 July 1968 near Vinh. I was captured immediately and imprisoned
for 56 months.
PERSONAL MESSAGE: Our honorable return home was the answer to my prayers and
the prayers of the citizens of our great country. We knew we would not be
forgotten and we were not forgotten. I think the most impressive aspect of
returning home was the overwhelming welcome and the open display of patriotism
by people everywhere.

Robert Fant Jr. retired from the United States Navy as a Commander. He and
Becky reside in Maine.
